This book is a valuable compilation of factual information on the numerous antibiotic substances that have been isolated to date. It presents, in alphabetical order, the composition and characteristics of hundreds of known antibiotics under their scientific and generic names.
In addition to the monographs covering the individual antibiotics, there is an interesting chapter on the certification of antibiotics, by H. Welch of the Food and Drug Administration, Division of Antibiotics, and another chapter on the selection and registration of trade marks for antibiotics, by W. J. Derenberg, trade mark counsel of the U. S. Patent Office. For the convenience of the reader, the author has also compiled a list of the antibiotic trade marks registered at the U. S. Patent Office or about to be registered as of May 1950.
Because of the extensive presentation, the book should prove valuable to physicians as well as to chemists and bacteriologists.
