This book was first published in 1944. It is a comprehensive presentation of problems arising both in marriage and family relations based on the theory advanced in many of the writings of the Menninger group, which stresses the choice facing human beings between love and hate. "Love leads to constructive acts and accomplishments, whereas hate leads to self—and world— destruction." The usual procedure in books of this kind is followed, proceeding from self analysis and self understanding to a discussion of basic needs and human behavior and the understanding of "friendliness patterns" in relation to marriage.
