Dr. Northrop Appointed Visiting Professor.—
John Howard Northrop, Ph.D., Nobel Laureate, has been appointed visiting research professor of bacteriology on the Berkeley campus of the University of California. Dr. Northrop comes to Berkeley under a special arrangement between the university and the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. Dr. Northrop is one of the world's pioneers in the chemistry of the proteins. He achieved the first crystallization of the proteolytic enzymes.
Diphtheria in San Francisco.—
A total of 93 local and 3 nonlocal cases of diphtheria were reported in San Francisco during 1948, with 18 deaths in the local series of cases and 1 death in the nonlocal group. This is the highest incidence reported since 1932, when 113 local cases were reported. The death rate for the past year, 2.2 per 100,000 population, is the highest since 1930.
