ABSTRACT

CALIFORNIA 

Professor Fischer Wins Sugar Research Award.—  Prof. Hermann O. L. Fischer, Berkeley, carbohydrate chemist of the University of California, has been awarded the 1948 Sugar Research Award of $5,000. The National Academy of Sciences, which administers the award established by the Sugar Research Foundation, announced the selection. Professor Fischer came to Berkeley last year with Professor Wendell M. Stanley, chairman of the department of biochemistry and director of the Virus Laboratory. Dr. Fischer won the award on the basis of contributions to sugar and carbohydrate research, achieved mainly during his years at the Banting Institute at the University of Toronto. The award is the fourth annual Intermediate Prize presented by the foundation. Next year a $25,000 Grand Prize will be given for the outstanding research during the proceding five years, the Intermediate Prize winners being eligible.
