THE INTERN SHORTAGE  In last year's Internship and Residency Number (The Journal, May 1, 1948), a survey of hospitals approved for intern training indicated that 20.5 per cent of internships offered by these hospitals were not filled. The highest proportion of vacancies was found in hospitals of 150 beds or less, particularly in those classified as nonteaching. The situation regarding intern vacancies remained relatively unchanged this year, with approved hospitals reporting 1,811 positions vacant as of Sept. 1, 1948, representing 19.7 per cent of those offered. In considering the discrepancy between the number of internships offered and the number of physicians available for these positions, it should be remembered that the former figure measures the demand for interns by approved hospitals and not of necessity the actual need.
