Dosage of Streptomycin in Tuberculous Meningitis:

ABSTRACT

Inquiries have been received concerning the dosage of streptomycin in the treatment of tuberculous meningitis discussed by the authors on pages 756 and 757 of the paper entitled "Specific Therapy of Bacterial Infections of Central Nervous System" in The Journal of March 19. These inquiries were referred to the authors, who make the following explanation: "Because of the toxicity of streptomycin when it is used over a long period of time, it was felt that a small dose on the order of 9 mg. per kilogram per day should be used, but if it was felt necessary—due to tht critical condition of a patient—up to 2 Gm. per day may be used. It might be added that since this paper was written, the appearance of the less toxic antibiotic— dihydrostreptomycin—for clinical use, would allow the dosage schedule to be revised upward."
