The questions to be considered by this panel fall into four groups: (1) the place of diet and drugs in the treatment of liver disease; (2) infectious hepatitis and its consequences; (3) the nature, clinical recognition, and management of hepatic insufficiency; and (4) the control of hemorrhage from esophageal varices. We are asked to discuss first the type of diet to be recommended for a patient with atrophic cirrhosis.
