Sixth Installment, First Session, 84th Congress Narcotic Traffic
Congressman Thornberry (D., Texas), in H. R. 87, would authorize the appointment by the Speaker of the House of a committee of five members of the House that would be "authorized and directed to conduct a full and complete investigation and study of the problems involved in controlling illicit traffic in narcotic drugs, and marihuana, and combating the increasing narcotic addiction in the United States." Hearings could be held inside and outside of the United States. Subpoenas would be authorized and the committee directed to report to the House "during the present Congress the results of its investigation and study, together with such recommendations as it deems advisable." This bill was referred to the Committee on Rules.
