Dr. Barnett Zumoff published in the May 29, 1954, issue of The Journal, page 437, the report of an unusual type of congenital deformity of hands, consisting ofsymmetrical finger contractures. I had the opportunity to observe a similar case and, after Dr. Zumoff's article appeared, contacted the patient for additional information on his genetic history. Because of an absolute lack of literature on the subject this case, too, may be of interest.The patient is a 41-year-old farmer who was originally admitted to the hospital because of a peculiar syndrome of cyclic episodes of hyperactivity, bulimia, and hypersomnia, resembling somewhat the Kleine-Levin syndrome. This syndrome developed after a hyperthyreotic condition that was successfully treated with propylthiouracil.
