ABSTRACT

This comprehensive volume provides a detailed description of the philosophy, principles, and practices underlying professional preparation in health education, physical education, and recreation. Its coverage is confined to the preparation of teachers and leaders for service in these areas by teachers' colleges and departments or schools of education in colleges and universities. After a brief discussion of the foundations and historical developments in each of the three areas, suggestions for implementing a practical program of professional preparation in health education, physical education, and recreation are advanced. The place of general education, general professional education, and specialization in the total program of the undergraduate and graduate student is carefully defined. The specific competencies needed by professional workers in the field are set forth in terms of their teaching and leadership responsibilities.
