NEW HAMPSHIRE MEDICAL SOCIETY
The New Hampshire legislature, on Feb. 16, 1791, granted the New Hampshire Medical Society a charter with the stipulation that "it shall be the duty of the said Medical Society, from time to time, to describe and point out such a medical instruction or education as they shall judge requisite for candidates for the practice of Physic and Surgery, previous to their examination before them, or their officers appointed for that purpose, respecting their skill in their profession, and shall cause the same to be published in two of the Newspapers printed in different Counties in this State...."The first president of the society was its founder, Dr. Josiah Bartlett, a member of the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence, chief justice of the superior court, president of New Hampshire, and later elected its first governor.
