Infantile Paralysis Center for Negroes.—
The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has granted $161,350 to establish a center for infantile paralysis at Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee. Of the total, $81,400 will be for construction, $39,950 for equipment and $40,000 for one year's maintenance for the thirty-six beds which the plans provide. Construction will begin without delay, it was announced. It is hoped that the center will provide modern treatment for Negro infantile paralysis victims and serve as a training unit for Negro physicians, nurses and physical therapists. The fifteen bed John A. Anderson Hospital, affiliated with the institute, will be available for use by the center. The institute also plans an educational program in the care and treatment of poliomyelitis. Dr. John W. Chenault, director of orthopedic surgery at Tuskegee, will be in charge of the new center.
