PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE 

MORE HEART RESEARCH GRANTS  The award of $60,961 in Public Health Service grants for four nonfederal heart research projects was announced December 15 by the acting Federal Security Administrator. The grants were made by the National Heart Institute after recommendation by the National Advisory Heart Council and approval by Surgeon General Scheele.Under a grant to Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, N. C., Dr. Walter Kempner will investigate the mechanism by which the rice diet benefits patients with high blood pressure. Dietary factors such as salt, fats and proteins will be investigated for their effects on high blood pressure and on arteriosclerosis. Dr. Kempner will also attempt to determine whether simple starvation, protein starvation or a low fat diet can be substituted for the rice diet.Dr. Otto Krayer, under a grant to Harvard Medical School, Boston, will investigate various chemical compounds for properties which
