ABSTRACT

ALABAMA 

Open First Hill-Burton Act Hospital.—  The George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, in Langdale, the first in the nation to receive a federal grant under the Hill-Burton Hospital Aid Act, was dedicated with appropriate ceremony November 16. Built at a cost of $2,100,000, it will serve six towns of the valley and the adjacent areas in east Alabama and west Georgia. The principal speakers at the exercises were Dr. Leonard A. Scheele, Surgeon General of the U. S. Public Health Service, and U. S. Senator Lister Hill of Alabama, co-author of the Hill-Burton Bill. Others present for the occasion were Governor Jim Folsom of Alabama; Governor Herman Talmadge of Georgia; members of the Alabama and Georgia congressional delegations from Washington; Major Gen. Withers A. Burress, commandant at Fort Benning; representatives from the Alabama and Georgia public health departments, and from state and regional hospital planning boards; city and county officials
