PAYMENTS UNDER BLUE CROSS AND BLUE SHIELD PLANS Recently the Bureau of Medical Economic Research published Bulletin 71, entitled "How Much Do Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans Pay?" Other types of voluntary plans were not compared in the study because the necessary data were not available. The general conclusion stated in the bulletin is that the average family subscriber to Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans is reimbursed for approximately four fifths of all the family hospital bills and one half to three fifths of all the family payments to physicians. The low income family is, on the average, reimbursed for more than these portions of its total payments to hospitals and physicians, whereas the reimbursement of the typical high income family is less than that of the average family.
