The conference reported in this monograph was sponsored and conducted by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, which offers an opportunity for a group of approximately twenty-five investigators, representing, in so far as possible, all the branches of science which bear on a chosen medical or health problem to meet for a series of two day conferences.
