Severe dysmenorrhea without menstrual flow is an unusual sequel to uterine curettage. It begins on the first anticipated menstrual day following curettage and may recur at monthly intervals until treatment is successful. When this condition results from obstruction of the cervical canal due to traumatic stricture with hematometra, the problem is a mechanical one requiring reestablishment of patency of the canal. This report concerns 2 patients with a similar syndrome (amenorrhea with dysmenorrhea) in which there was no obstruction in the cervical canal and in which the problem was of a different nature.

Case 1.—  A woman aged 37, the mother of three children, complained of two attacks of severe abdominal pain without menstrual flow recurring at monthly intervals following a therapeutic abortion by dilatation and curettage at seven weeks' gestation.
