Prolonged treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) has been given in 2 cases since the program for the use of this substance was initiated.

REPORT OF CASES

Case 1.—History and Initial Observations.— The principal complaints of W. E. S. at the time of his admission to Wesley Memorial Hospital were referable to his left knee and his right ankle. The right ankle was swollen and tender to pressure, with no lateral motion possible; however, flexion and extension of the joint was slightly limited about 10 degrees in both directions. The left knee was decidedly swollen, tender and painful; it could be flexed to a right angle, and extension to 165 degrees was possible with great pain for the patient.
