ABSTRACT

To the Editor:—  I read the editorial on the injection treatment of hernia (The Journal, October 30, p. 1456) with great interest. The organization of which I am chairman has asked me to write to you voicing its approval.There is no question that there has been a recent wave of enthusiasm over this method of treatment. But the danger in it lurks in the inexperienced accepting this as a simple office procedure, and the consequences of the indiscriminate use will result not only in failure but also in deaths. There is no doubt that the use of 16 minims of thuja was done by some inexperienced physician, as the dose is generally accepted as 2 minims.It is for this reason that the Society for the Injection Treatment of Hernia passed a resolution of commendation for you for this timely warning, that it be used "under circumstances in which
