ABSTRACT

MEDICAL EDUCATION IN THE NETHERLANDS INDIES  The American consul at Batavia, Java, recently submitted a report to the Secretary of State in Washington, D. C., entitled "Medical Education in the Netherlands Indies." The tenth anniversary of the University Medical School in Batavia was celebrated Aug. 16, 1937. Prof. Dr. A. Grevenstuk, chairman of the Faculty of Medicine, gave an address, which was followed by a talk on "The Responsibilities of a Surgeon to His Patients" by Dr. T. Reddingius, professor of surgery and secretary of the faculty for the coming year.In 1851 a school was established in Batavia to train native born persons for the practice of medicine. At first a two year course was given, but it was extended to three years in 1864, and still further to two years premedical work and five years medical study in 1875.
