ABSTRACT

Congress of Internal Medicine  The Società italiana di medicina interna held recently its thirty-seventh national congress in Bari. Prof. Francesco Galdi, director of the Clinica medica of the Università Adriatica, was chairman of the committee on organization.

DIABETES  Prof. Luigi Zoia of Milan, who presented a paper on diabetes, first considered the meaning of the regulation of exchange, regulatory centers, harmonic equilibrium and vegetative tonus. The endocrine glands have a functional tonus independent of one another; yet the resultant of their action is determined by their mutual influence on one another. This mutual influence is observable also with reference to the suprarenal glands and the islands of Langerhans, which function correlatively but each one according to its own proper tonus, which clearly appears especially under pathologic conditions. The particular chemicophysical constitution of the protoplasm of every individual determines the tonus of the neurovegetative system and of the endocrine glands. The
