ABSTRACT

This book, dealing with the problems of pregnancy and surgery in the cardiac patient, is based on a series of lectures delivered by the author in the Colegio nacional in Mexico City. The book is divided into six chapters. The first four chapters deal respectively with the hemodynamics of normal pregnancy, the clinical alterations observed in pregnancy, the clinical findings in pregnant women with heart disease, and the considerations determining conception and the termination of pregnancy in the cardiac patient and the management of the cardiac woman who is pregnant. The last two chapters deal with the surgical risks involved in operating on the cardiac patient. The author has assembled from his large experience and a critical survey of the literature, including that in the English language, a masterful presentation of the entire subject. It is a meritorious addition to current literature and clarifies the risks of pregnancy and surgery
