Better Pay Urged for Veterans Administration Doctors
Low pay of Veterans Administration doctors is blamed for the agency's inability to keep its medical and surgical staffs at desired strength. More than 400 of its doctors have entered military service; but about 300, including some of the same men, have since been assigned by the Army and Navy to Veterans' hospitals. Veterans Administration salaries for doctors are said to have become less attractive as the income opportunities of private practitioners have increased. Five salary grades are provided for veterans' doctors, ranging from $3,200-$3,850 a year in the lowest grade up to $6,500-$7,500 in the highest. Most of its doctors are in the first three grades, with maximum salaries of $3,850, $4,600 and $5.400.
