ABSTRACT

As indicated in the preface, this book was written with a neo-Lamarckian leaning. The author reviews recent biologic literature, usually from the aspect of its bearing on evolution through inheritance of acquired characters, though not discounting the importance of other factors. It is primarily a work in genetics. As such, it is commended to the reader who wishes a critical review of recent work in genetics and allied subjects. There is a chapter devoted to mechanistic biology and neovitalism in which the author recognizes the difficulties involved in mechanistic attempts at explaining vital processes. The last chapter, discussing mind and consciousness, includes references to recent work on animal behavior.
