ABSTRACT

Results of Two Hundred and Forty Cases of Phrenicectomy  The method of Goetz and Stuertz for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis has not often been employed in France. However, MM. Bérard and Guilleminet of Lyons have recently reported to the Academy of Medicine the results secured in a personal series of 240 cases. Bérard explained, at the same time, his technic, which makes phrenicectomy a simple and safe operation. Resection of the phrenic nerve causes paralysis of the corresponding half of the diaphragm. By means of the fluoroscope, one can see the hemidiaphragm being pushed up from 2 to 8 cm. and sometimes more and then become immobilized, while preserving slight passive movements. The lung undergoes a reduction in volume of from one fifth to one fourth and is brought to a state of rest.
