The Safety of Air Travel
At the official inquiry into the disaster of the City of Ottawa, the air liner of Imperial Airways which made a forced landing in the channel, June 17, as a result of which seven lives were lost by drowning, the attorney general, Sir William Jowitt, said the figures for air travel were satisfactory. The accident that happened in December, 1924, was to a single-engine aircraft, but since then Imperial Airways had used only aircraft with two or more engines. Between Jan. 1, 1925, and the date of the recent accident, Imperial Airways had flown more than 3,900,000 miles on cross-channel routes, in Europe and in the Near East, and had carried about 100,000 passengers without any accident involving the death of a pilot, mechanic or passenger in any aircraft while engaged in a regular passenger-carrying flight.
