ABSTRACT

This is the first half of the first volume of the third edition of Sauerbruch's Surgery of the Chest. In the second edition the first volume was complete as one part and consisted of 931 pages. In the present edition the part that has appeared covers essentially the same material as the first 585 pages of the first edition, but the material has been expanded until it now comprises 907 pages. There has been a real need for a new edition, particularly part I, for it has been out of print for several years. Marked expansion of the field and changing experience demanded addition and reorganization of the original presentation, but the author's change of residence from Munich to Berlin delayed the work.
