To the Editor:—
Although I do not wish to add further confusion to the question regarding the term para, I would like to state that I was taught that para is an abbreviation of and derived from the Latin gerundive form parturienda, the translation of which is "is going to give birth." It is for this reason that many obstetricians have applied the term para 1 and so on to a woman who is in labor for the first time and nullipara to one who has never borne a child. It seems to me that the change in the application of the term para has been made during recent years. It would be desirable if a general agreement could be reached in the application of this term for the sake of uniformity of all hospital records.
