ABSTRACT

Approximately one third of this volume is devoted to the chemistry of the important cell constituents. An exceedingly brief and elementary treatment of the inorganic constituents and of standard acids and bases is followed by satisfactory instructions on buffer solutions and the colorimetric estimation of pH. The directions for reactions of carbohydrates, proteins and lipins are also elementary and consequently misleading. The experiments on digestive enzymes are not sufficiently well developed to serve as good examples for students to follow, and an experienced worker cannot help but feel the same lack of accuracy and of necessary detailed instructions in the presentation of the material on colorimetry and the usual chemical tests of the urine and the blood. The chemistry of the cell nucleus is treated in more detail than usual, as one might expect in view of the author's former association with Prof. Walter Jones. The book is well
