ABSTRACT

To the Editor: —It appears that the Drs. Belding believe our report was not made in good faith.The sixteen (not five) cases of acute ulcerative stomatitis we reported were only of the severe form. None of them went on to a chronic course. We allowed them to run their course untreated because previous reports of cases treated with various therapeutic agents were all lacking in a comparable group of simultaneously observed control cases. An evaluation of a therapeutic procedure in any self-limited disease cannot be made unless this condition is fulfilled. We were therefore interested in observing the natural course of this disease in children and comparing it with the claims made for the various drugs.Since the writing of our communication, there have appeared two short articles by the Drs.
