This volume is unusual among biographies. Here are the records of the surgeons of the old school who carried on during that brilliant period of English operative surgery instituted by Lister. The actual achievement of this publication is accredited to Lord Moynihan, who acted on the suggestion of Sir John Bland-Sutton. It was realized in printed form through the gift of £5,000 by the late Mr. Thelwal Thomas, to whom the volumes are a memorial. The dedication is rightfully given to Mr. Victor Plarr, librarian of the college whose obituary records form the basis of the work. Following a memoir of Plarr is a transcript of the charter of the Royal College of Surgeons and a list of the 300 surgeons elected as fellows in 1843. Credit must be given the editor, Sir D'Arcy Power, and his collaborators, Walter Spencer and Prof. G. E. Gask, for their painstaking compilations.
