In Reply Dr Cervero and Dr Djuricich and colleagues provide a defense of the status quo in CME, rejecting mounting criticisms of the effectiveness and independence of the current approach. To refute these widely expressed concerns, Cervero cites a short 2002 commentary and both Cervero and Djuricich and colleagues cite Cervero and Gaines’ brief review that appeared a few weeks before my Viewpoint. This review was based on a commentary written by Cervero and Gaines on behalf of the ACCME that contains virtually the same content and assertions. Neither citation provides any useful new data on the effectiveness of CME, instead citing older studies that do not meet the highest standards for scientific evidence.
