The Reversion of Syphilis  After the war, syphilis decreased in France, as a result of the crusade that was waged against it. The widespread incidence of the disease was due, in part, to the foreign soldiers in French territory and to relaxation of morals that is associated with troubled periods. The American army medical corps organized rigorous prophylaxis and treatment of venereal diseases, and American troops presented the best condition in this regard.The war and the example of the foreign sanitary service on French soil helped to remove the traditional reticence of the French toward public mention of venereal disease. Public dispensaries sprang up in all parts of Paris, whereas formerly the city had had only two public consultation centers for venereal diseases, one in the Hôpital St. Louis and one in the Hôpital Ricord. Thus combated, syphilis soon decreased rapidly. Furthermore, the decrease has been general throughout Europe
