The original edition of this volume was exhausted in 1923, and the second edition now appears. The third volume of the first edition has yet to be published. The first volume treats of the bones, joints and muscles with clearness and thoroughness. The illustrations are of unusually good quality and unusually instructive. Especially good features are the articles on the mechanical working of the joints. No attempt has been made to incorporate any account of the minute anatomy of the structures considered, and the history of development is reserved for a special section in the last volume. The grouping of muscles, however, is arranged in accordance with their development and innervation, and is thus an improvement on the grouping ordinarily adopted in textbooks of anatomy.
