ABSTRACT

In this volume the authors view the problem of heart disease from a new angle—that of the nervous system. Especially in their explanation of functional heart disease is emphasis laid on the influence of the vagus depressor and the sympathetic nervous system. Etiologically infectioustoxic agents are believed to play an important part. There is a good outline of the well-known symptomatology, prognosis and treatment of the so-called irritable heart. The theories underlying the views expressed in this work, which are an outgrowth of the views expressed by Wilson in his "Hearts of Man," are interesting and stimulating, but need further study before being generally accepted.
