In a highly important and as yet too little known investigation of the food consumption of more than 350 boys, ranging in age from 13½ to an average of 16 years, in the upper forms in a large private boarding school, Gephart1 has furnished the basis for a new understanding of the dietary needs of youth. In the past it has been taught that the nutritive requirement of the adolescent boy or girl is a fraction of that demanded by the adult, the proportion depending in a measure on the relative size of the individual. Du Bois has shown that boys just before puberty have a high metabolism; indeed, their basal metabolism as measured by the heat production during sleep or complete rest without food, may be fully 25 per cent. above that of the adult.
