The records of the Chicago free orthopedic hospitals and dispensaries show that the new immigrant gives them eight times their normal ratio of rachitic deformities, four times their normal ratio of tuberculous deformities. Chicago is perhaps the only city in the world having winters of ice and snow that harbors twenty thousand new emigrants from tropical or semitropical countries every year, and very bad rachitic deformities are almost peculiar to the children of recent immigrants from hot to cold climates.
