Percentages of National Football League (NFL) players in each body mass
index (BMI) category. No National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) data
were available for the group with BMI ≥35. Body mass index was calculated
as weight in kilograms divided by square of height in meters from values reported
for individual players on the NFL official Web site and compared with that
for similarly aged men in the NHANES, 1999-2002.2
Best-to-worst rankings in the American Football Conference (AFC) and
the National Football Conference (NFC) are shown from top to bottom. The teams
are ranked based on overall records and the National Football League (NFL)
tiebreaker rules for the 2003-2004 season. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated
as weight in kilograms divided by square of height in meters. Dots indicate
mean body mass index values; error bars, SDs.
