UPDATED GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF RIFAMYCINS FOR THE TREATMENT OF TUBERCULOSIS AMONG HIV-INFECTED PATIENTS TAKING PROTEASE INHIBITORS OR NONNUCLEOSIDE REVERSE TRANSCRIPTASE INHIBITORS

Guidelines for managing the pharmacologic interactions that can result when patients receive protease inhibitors (PIs) and nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) for treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection together with rifamycins for the treatment of tuberculosis have been published previously.¹^- 2 New guidelines regarding interactions among these agents, with recommendations for their use from CDC and partners, are available at http://www.cdc.gov/nchstp/tb/tb_hiv_drugs/toc.htm. Information includes initial recommendations for the new PIs lopinavir/ritonavir, atazanavir, and fosamprenavir, and updated recommendations for other dual PI regimens and NNRTIs. The new recommendations expand the use of rifampin with these antiretroviral drugs, which is critical in regions where rifabutin is unavailable. Periodic updates will be posted to the website to provide clinicians with the latest information.
