This is the fourth edition of a book that was first published in 1981, testimony to its enduring quality. As in earlier editions, the book gives a comprehensive overview of neuroanatomy (macroscopic and cellular), functional cellular anatomy, molecular biology, some neurochemistry, and a lot of basic and functional neurophysiology. The material is very up-to-date and is presented in a logical and clear manner.
As in earlier editions, the book is multiauthored; nevertheless, the quality of writing remains consistently good. I thought the artwork in the third edition was excellent, but the editors have outdone themselves with truly superb multicolored diagrams and cartoons in this latest edition. The effect is not only aesthetically pleasing but also greatly enhances the readability and ease of comprehension. Likewise, photographs, especially the magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomographic scans, are excellent.
