SERVE ON THE RESIDENT AND FELLOW GOVERNING COUNCIL

If you are a resident or fellow physician and a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), you have a great opportunity to influence AMA policy and help implement initiatives for residents by serving on the Resident and Fellow Section (RFS) Governing Council. At our Annual Meeting, June 17 through 19, 1999, in Chicago, Ill, we will elect the RFS Governing Council for 1999-2000. In addition to working on issues of concern to residents and fellows, serving on the RFS Governing Council offers the opportunity for professional growth and can be fun to do.

Governing Council members are required to attend the AMA Annual and Interim Meeting (at least 4 days each), 4 Governing Council meetings (2 weekend days each), and to represent the RFS at various other meetings. The additional responsibilities of each position are listed below.

  • The Vice Chair is the liaison to the resident representatives to AMA councils and committees and assists the chair with management of the RFS.

  • The Secretary is responsible for general communications to the RFS, including summaries of all meetings, and communications at the annual and interim meetings.

  • The Delegate and Alternate Delegate present and coordinate testimony and advocate at the AMA House of Delegates for AMA policy that benefits residents. They analyze the topics the AMA has under discussion and identify those issues of importance to residents and then summarize the actions taken on those issues by the House of Delegates.

  • The 2 Members-At-Large run special projects (such as community service projects) for the RFS and act as the primary liaisons to resident representatives from state and specialty societies.

If you are interested in any of these positions, please do the following: (1) contact the undersigned or another member of the current RFS Governing Council to discuss your interest in the position (you may reach us through the AMA Department of Resident and Fellow Services [DRPS]); (2) obtain a copy of "Tips on Running a Successful Campaign" from the DRPS; (3) contact your state and specialty society to ask them for assistance with your campaign; and (4) register for the Annual Meeting and submit your application form, statement of interest, and a curriculum vitae to the DRPS by April 30.

Contact the DRPS for more information on the Annual Meeting or on the RFS Governing Council at (312) 464-4751; fax (312) 464-5845, or send e-mail to colleen_eakin@ama-assn.org. Applications are available on the DRPS Web site at http://www.ama-assn.org/mem-data/special/rps/amarps/elecapp.htm.
