Smokeless tobacco use is highest in the mining, wholesale trade, and construction industries, according to a recent study.
Investigators who analyzed data from the National Health Interview Survey reported that smokeless tobacco use rates remained steady at about 3% among all US workers from 2005 to 2010 (Mazurek JM et al. MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2014;63:477-482).
Among 10 industry groups, smokeless tobacco use in 2010 was highest among workers in the mining (18.8%), wholesale trade (8.9%), and construction (7.9%) industries. By occupation group, workers in construction and extraction (10.8%) and installation, maintenance, and repair (9%) had the highest rates.
