In Reply: We apologize for the error regarding Mr Herrick’s age and health status and a correction accompanies this letter. Of course, whether a specific individual did or did not experience complications from a procedure is not useful for evaluating that procedure’s safety; this is why large clinical studies are needed.

Drs Ross and Thistlethwaite state that 18% of living donors do not have health insurance at the time of donation. Nearly all developed countries outside the United States provide universal insurance coverage for such follow-up, so this statistic does not reflect a general failure to attend to the needs of kidney donors. Instead, it is evidence of the need for health care reform in the United States.
