In this issue, JAMA inaugurates a new series entitled Profiles in
Primary Care.1 The series, drawn from more
than 70 oral histories of generalist practitioners that I have collected over
the past several years, will report on the state of primary care medicine
as seen through the lives and experiences of the men and women practicing
it. The oral history project and the JAMA series, however, need to be set
in historical context.

Athens and Shibboleth are access management services that provide single sign-on to protected resources.
