As ethical standards have evolved and as legislation has been enacted to facilitate greater collaboration among academic institutions, commercial entities, and government, the complexity of federal laws governing the ethics of biomedical research has steadily increased. In many cases neither the answers to ethical questions nor even the questions may be obvious to persons not expert in the subject. The consequences of even technical legal infractions may nevertheless be serious. Researchers will find Robert Charrow's Law in the Laboratory: A Guide to the Ethics of Federally Funded Research to be a useful aid in navigating this challenging, sometimes hazardous, and often confusing legal and ethical landscape.
