Infectious Alzheimer Protein

Brain tissue containing misfolded β-amyloid proteins linked to Alzheimer disease can infect otherwise healthy mice when injected into areas outside of the brain, reported an international research team (Eisele YS et al. Science. doi:10.1126/science.1194516 [published online October 21, 2010]).

Intraperitoneal administration of prion-rich material efficiently transmits prion disease. To test whether intraperitoneal inoculation of β-amyloid proteins might similarly trigger β-amyloid misfolding and deposition in the brain, the investigators gave 2 intraperitoneal injections of β-amyloid–laden brain extract from aged mice with Alzheimer-like disease to 6 young mice. After a 7-months, significant cerebral β-amyloid misfolding and deposition occurred in all inoculated mice compared with untreated controls.
