HIV Infections Decline in Africa

New HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by HIV/AIDS, have declined substantially in the past decade, the United Nation's Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) reported last month in a statement (http://data.unaids.org/pub/PressRelease/2010/20100917_pr_mdgsummit_en.pdf).

Between 2001 and 2009, new HIV infections have declined by more than 25% in 22 countries in Africa. UNAIDS cited improvements in prevention efforts that have helped reduce new infections; many HIV experts also credit efforts to bring antiretroviral treatment to an estimated 5.2 million HIV-infected individuals in low-income and middle-income countries with helping to reduce transmission.
