Sen Herb Kohl (D, Wis) is urging the creation of a single federal guideline for drug disposal to make it easier for persons to remove potentially dangerous medications from their homes.

At a June 30 hearing of the Senate's Special Committee on Aging, Kohl, who is the committee's chairman, said people have trouble disposing of unneeded medications because of conflicting rules issued by a variety of federal agencies, designed to prevent illegal use of drugs and to protect the environment (http://aging.senate.gov/hearing_detail.cfm?id=326079&).
