Nanoparticle Delivery to Stents

Uniform magnetic fields can drive biodegradable paclitaxel-loaded nanoparticles to metal stents in the injured blood vessels of rats, according to a team led by investigators at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (Chorny M et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. doi:10.1073/pnas.0909506107 [published online ahead of print April 19, 2010]).

Magnetic treatment of cultured arterial smooth muscle cells with the nanoparticles significantly inhibited cell growth, which was not observed under nonmagnetic conditions. The enhanced retention of nanoparticles at target sites due to magnetic treatment also caused significant inhibition of in-stent restenosis with a relatively low dose of encapsulated paclitaxel.
