At an early age, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) mastered a classical and popular style, and against the advice of the avant-garde, he stuck to it, producing more than 800 paintings in his lifetime and accumulating award after award from the official art establishment. In time Bouguereau became a prominent member of the art establishment himself, earning a life membership in the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France. As a painter, referee, and teacher, he achieved greatness in the official art world and willingly passed along its traditions to a new generation of artists.
